Eye Exams Q & A
What Does an Eye Exam Include?
During an eye exam, the doctor will ask for a detailed vision history. Not only will she thoroughly check the patient's eyes for any potential health problems, but she will also help them understand the importance of proper eye care. The doctor will employ state of the art techniques to determine if any refractive errors can be corrected through the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses. During the exam, the doctor will also perform several tests to determine if any abnormalities are present that would indicate any potential eye disease.
How Long Does an Eye Exam Take?
Most eye exams take less than an hour from the time the patient enters the examination room until the time they are ready to leave. If it is determined that the patient needs contact lenses or eyeglasses, the appointment may last a bit longer while frames are being chosen and fitted. In most cases, it takes a few days for the lenses to come back and the frames to be put together. A return visit will be scheduled so the glasses or lenses can be picked up and fitted as necessary.
What Tests are Performed During an Eye Exam?
During an eye exam, the doctor may perform several tests to check for specific abnormalities in the eye. Tests for macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts are very common and performed on most patients. Those who exhibit extremely dry eyes may have to undergo other types of tests to determine the severity of the condition. The most common test performed is the one that measures the distance from which an eye can accurately see. This is what determines the degree of the refractive area and helps the doctor decide on the proper prescription for their eyeglasses or contacts.
